Labor Day Weekend Grilling Safety Tips

Millions of homeowners will be cooking hamburgers, hot dogs, and barbecue chicken on their backyard grills this Labor Day weekend.  According to the The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), nearly 17,000 people are sent to the emergency room every year due to injuries involving outdoor grills. One of every six home structure fires in which ignition type grills were involved were caused by something catching fire next to the grill.  Overall, line leaks or breaks were factors in one of every five reported grill fires.  It may be important to note that gas grills caused a higher number of home fires overall than charcoal grills.

The NFPA, an international organization devoted to preventing fire-related injury and loss, has created this excellent grilling safety video showing the proper way to store, use, and maintain your outdoor grill to prevent such disasters happening to your family and your home.

Enjoy the holiday and stay safe!
