Hurricane Preparation ChecklistWe know how a Southeastern hurricane season can be. How prepared would you be if a storm hit? Use this checklist to make sure you have everything you need before a hurricane or tropical storm hits your town.

Food and Water

  • One gallon of water per person per day for up to 7 days
  • Fill bathtubs with water (non-drinking) before the storm
  • Extra ice to keep food cool longer
  • Non-perishable food (packaged or canned) for up to seven days
  • Special items for infants, elderly, or disable family members

Tools and Supplies

  • Cooler
  • Paper cups, plates, and plastic utensils
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Manual can opener
  • Matches (keep in water proof bag)
  • Pet care items, including extra food and water
  • Clothing and bedding
  • Battery-powered radio and NOAA weather radio
  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Toiletries and hygiene items
  • Sunscreen and mosquito repellent
  • Moisture wipes and hand sanitizer
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Toys, books, and games
  • Gas or charcoal grill for outdoor cooking after storm
  • Full propane tank/charcoal bags
  • Battery-powered lantern
  • Gas for a generator
  • Propane camp stoves
  • A full tank of gas in your vehicle
  • Cash
  • Cell phone and cell phone charger
  • Keys

  • Important medications
  • First Aid Kit

  • Insurance policies
  • Driver’s license
  • Wills, deeds, and copies of recent tax returns
  • Medical records
  • Social Security card
  • Birth and Marriage Certificates
  • Stock, bonds, and other negotiable contracts

Evacuation Plan

  • Map of the area
  • Local emergency phone numbers
  • Location of local shelters
  • Map of emergency evacuation routes
